Table of Contents

 • 2. Rosemary's Baby
 • 3. Insidious (and sequels)
 • 4. #Alive

 • 6. It (2017)
 • 7. Cadaver
 • 8. Deliver Us from Evil
 • 9. The Babysitter: Killer Queen
 • 10. Anabelle

1. The Shining

It is always a good time to revisit the Stanley Kubrick classic in which Jack Nicholson plays the unbalanced and frustrated writer Jack Torrance and his descent into the most psychopathic madness while living with his wife and son (and the occasional unexpected guest) in the Overlook Hotel.

2. Rosemary's Baby

Roman Polanksi's classic starring Mia Farrow remains one of the best horror thriller movies on Netflix 2020 you can watch. A young married couple moves into a new apartment when the woman becomes pregnant, unaware that their neighbors belong to a satanic sect and that the child they expect is not as pure as they imagine.

3. Insidious (and sequels)

For those who want to do a supernatural horror marathon, there is nothing better than checking out the Insidious series, which has four installments available on Netflix. The story begins with a family who, while trying to escape from their old haunted house, moves to a new home, where they discover that their eldest son is the real danger.

4. #Alive

The zombie genre could not be missing from this best horror movies on Netflix 2020 list. Netflix has an original movie titled #Alive in which a young social media addict will have to survive trapped in his apartment whose only help comes from those he can chat with on the internet. Exciting and distressing in equal measure.

5. A Quiet Place

A spectacular film by John Krasinski that managed to make it to the screens in 2018. It is a story that tells the life of a family that must survive in the middle of a planet ravaged by deadly creatures, who cannot see but hear almost everything that makes a noise.

While the content looks like it belongs to the bargain bin at first glance, it turns out every scene of the movie makes it a worthy addition to the best horror movies on Netflix 2020 list. Starring Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, Millicent Simmonds, and Noah Jupe, the movie is best enjoyed with someone else for maximum enjoyment.

6. It (2017)

A modern take on the story that dates back to the 80s in cinema, where Stephen King shines with the story of a demonic clown who wants to kill a group of friends through dreams.

The new edition of Andy Muschietti is worthy of the original movies, and is about a being that attacks the children of the town of Maine (Bill Skarsgård) and is fought back by a group of small misfits calling themselves "The Losers Club".

7. Cadaver

Few know about Norwegian cinema and this movie is a great option to begin your venture into it, and it's great for all occasions whether if it's Halloween or a regular day.

Leonora (Gitte Witt), along with her husband, Jacob (Thomas Gullestad), and her little daughter Alice (Tuva Olivia Remman) are in a hotel that has been drawing many people and food is the main point of attraction among all those who "live together" there. Worth a watch.

8. Deliver Us from Evil

If you are looking for a movie that has action and horror at the same time, this is a great option and it is about Ralph Sarchie (Eric Bana), a New York police officer who finds a child of a few weeks dead in a garbage can and a case of domestic violence.

From there, they begin to experience a series of events that ends with a policeman possessed by a demon that wants to harm a family.

9. The Babysitter: Killer Queen

Do you remember the film "The Babysitter" that was released in 2017? Well, this is the continuation of that story and all the events happen a couple of years later when Cole (Judah Lewis) discovered the dark side of his nanny called Bee (Samara Weaving).

In this new story, Cole's best friend turns out to be the leader of a satanic cult and begins to discover an evil side to her. There will be everything from explosions to black humor. Recommended.

10. Anabelle

If the Chucky movies seem like a waste of time, then we have to say that Anabelle is not and will make you scream more than once from the comfort of your home. This 2014 film that was a worldwide success tells the story of a doll that comes to a woman named Mia's hands when her husband gives it to her for his collection.

We will not tell you the beginning of the plot because it is worth seeing, but the plot focuses on the pursuit of the doll on the family and the little daughter puts her life at risk.

Horror movies about houses filled with spirits, ghosts & supernatural beings are guaranteed to give you a good scare. Here's our top 10 list of the best.]]>

You know how it works when it comes to horror movies about houses: some young family, a group of friends, some unfortunate soul,... decide to move into a new house, and they find out that it is "inhabited" by ghosts, and for some reason, they refuse to leave. And that's how you have the typical ingredients when it comes to scary movies about houses.

Horror Movies About Houses

And while there have been deviations from that simple premise over the years, we continue to enjoy the many other ways that horror filmmakers have transformed this horror movies ghost house sub-genre into something fresher and more accessible.

So today, we're bringing you the top 10 horror movies about houses 2020 list you should see at least once if you enjoy being frightened by horror. Without a doubt, you will start feeling unsafe in your own home from watching too many of these movies:

Top 10 Horror Movies About Houses That are Haunted You Need to Watch

Table of Contents

 • 1. Paranormal Activity
 • 2. The Amityville Horror
 • 3. The Conjuring
 • 4. Poltergeist
 • 5. I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House
 • 6. The Shining
 • 7. [REC]
 • 8. Session 9
 • 9. Sinister
 • 10. The Woman in Black

1. Paranormal Activity

After almost a decade after the premiere of The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity arrived to rescue the found-footage horror genre and helped kick off a new franchise of its own with five sequels, all thanks to its creative direction on haunted house movies.

The movie follows a familiar premise: a couple moves into a new house, only to discover that it is haunted. Then comes the unexpected twist: they are able to record the ghostly activity with security cameras.

2. The Amityville Horror

This movie is a classic when it comes to horror movies about haunted houses, which managed to spawn several sequels, including a remake, and established the standard for the haunted houses trope over the past four decades.

James Brolin and Margot Kidder play a couple who move their family into a home whose previous residents died in shocking mass murder, a classic take. The full-blown horror, unsurprisingly, ensues immediately.

3. The Conjuring

Inspired by true events, and also starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as the paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, this horror thriller by James Wan follows the usual routine of horror movies about houses: a family moves to an old farm, only to discover that it is haunted.

Overall, the movie leaves you on the edge of the couch and delivers a good handful of deeply disturbing scary moments. Check out more interesting writing at CustomEssayMeister.

4. Poltergeist

A suburban California family is visited upon by a host of ghosts and invisible monsters - some playful, some downright evil - in this movie written by Steven Spielberg. It is full of scares, creepy atmosphere, and psychological terror. Of course, who could forget one of the most iconic phrases in the history of horror movies: "They're heeere."

5. I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House

With this movie, director Osgood Perkins created a classic haunted house thriller that owes more to the insidious terror of Polanski or Kubrick than to the more recent gory subgenres of horror movies about houses.

The story follows Lily (Ruth Wilson), a nurse who goes to live in a house full of secrets when she is assigned to tend to a very handicapped horror novel writer. This movie is a worthy addition to the list as it works more with fear and the looming specter of death than the traditional tropes that define the subgenre of horror movies about houses.

6. The Shining

The classic movie that gives more than a haunted house: a haunted hotel. One of the best movies ever made, this Stanley Kubrick adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel uses his reference material as the basis for a terrifying exercise in psychological horror.

Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) seems to be a great father at first. He has nothing but good intentions taking his family on a secluded mountain getaway, but it turns out that Jack is as good at planning family events as Clark Griswold.

Things go from bad to worse when he starts to enjoy having a shot of whiskey with the ghosts in the Gold Room, then play hide and seek with his family. Domestic violence reaches unprecedented limits in this gem from the 80s.

7. [REC]

In the next movie on our list, you will see neither ghosts, specters, nor supernatural entities, but, creepy, ultraviolent "infected" creatures. Directors Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza put together a real chaotic festival of blood inside a residential building of Barcelona in one of the best fusions of horror movies about houses and zombie creatures you will ever see.

8. Session 9

In this sublime thriller and psychological horror by Brad Anderson, the house is replaced by one of the most imposing places inside (and outside) horror cinema: an abandoned psychiatric hospital.

A Scottish businessman (Peter Mullan) hires a team of five men to remove asbestos waste from an abandoned psychiatric hospital that is being restored in one week. Armed with their protective suits, the group will advance through the creepy halls and corridors of the place, confronting the mysterious causes that led to the neglect and deterioration of the clinic.

9. Sinister

After The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005) and The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) failed to impress, director Scott Derrickson surprised fans of the horror movies about houses genre with the haunting and chilling Sinister.

In this movie, actor Ethan Hawke plays a writer, Ellison Oswalt, who moves with his family into a house where a horrible crime happened in the past. His intention is to investigate the crime so that he can write a book that will revive his struggling true-crime writing career.

One fine day he finds old footage in the attic that reveals the horrors suffered by the previous tenants and thus unleashes terror in the home. The screenwriter of the movie, C. Robert Cargill, said he got the idea for Sinister after nightmares he had after watching The Ring (2002).

10. The Woman in Black

Actor Daniel Radcliffe has spent many years trying to remove his label as a child actor from the Harry Potter series and showing his worth as a performer of different genres. For this reason, in 2012, the Brit decided to star in this Hammer Film Productions movie entitled The Woman in Black.

This time he plays the role of lawyer Arthur Kipps, who still mourns the death of his beloved wife, Stella, after giving birth to his son Joseph four years earlier. His boss assigns him to travel to the remote village of Crythin Gifford to examine the documentation of the Eel Marsh house, which belonged to the late Mrs. Drablow.

There, Arthur meets the lawyer Jerome, who advises him to return to London. However, he ignores the warnings, moves to the isolated mansion, and soon discovers that it is inhabited by the vengeful ghost of a woman dressed in black.

Top 3 Horror Movies in the World That Changed Cinema Forever

Table of Contents

 • 1. The Exorcist
 • 2. Alien
 • 3. The Shining

1. The Exorcist

Release year: 1973
Director: William Friedkin
Cast: Ellen Burstyn, Jason Miller, Kitty Winn, Lee J. Cobb, Linda Blair, and Max von Sydow.

For all those who may feel put off by a movie that is over 40 years old, it must be said in its favor that it is one of the best and most acclaimed horror movies of all time for critics, audiences and anyone else. The Exorcist is also one of the movies with the most parodies and references that are remembered today.

This cinematic adaptation of the novel by William Peter Blatty is inspired by a real exorcism that occurred in Washington, USA in 1949. The movie tells of the demonic possession of Regan MacNeil, a 12-year-old girl, who experiences physiological disturbances and extreme mood swings leading to more and more violent acts, as well as the exorcism to which she is subjected.

top 3 horror movies in the world

The Exorcist has 2 Oscars to its credit: Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound. It is said that to generate that atmosphere of terror and tension in the viewer, the squeals of pigs were mixed with beehives and all kinds of highly stressful noises.

Such was the "fever" that came with the movie during its premiere that many viewers suffered nervous attacks and the owners of movie theaters decided, as a marketing move, to park ambulances at the entrance of the buildings where the movie would be shown.

Without a doubt, it must be said that The Exorcist is one of top 3 horror movies in the world and whoever has not been scared by it must have been a brave person from head to toe.

2. Alien

Release year: 1979
Director: Ridley Scott.
Cast: Sigourney Weaver, Harry Dean Stanton, Ian Holm, John Hurt.

At first, the movie was supposed to be called 'Memory', a name that was replaced by 'Star Beast' and finally became 'Alien' in its original version. And we are thankful they decided on a good title at the end.

Alien was the movie that propelled Sigourney Weaver to fame and such was its success that it generated a franchise of novels, comics, video games and toys, as well as three sequels, two crossovers and two other movies related to the original Alien, Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. The xenomorph became one of the most copied and inspiring designs in horror movies.

top 3 horror movies in the world

The movie, which has just turned 40 last year, tells the story of the Nostromo cargo ship and its seven crew members as they head to a strange planet after the central computer detected a strange transmission of an unknown life form.

This incredible horror movie won numerous awards such as the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design and Best Sound at the BAFTA Awards. For a horror movie to achieve these accolades, it deserves to be among the top 3 horror movies in the world.

3. The Shining

Release year: 1980
Director: Stanley Kubrick
Cast: Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Scatman Crothers, Barry Nelson and Philip Stone

This iconic movie is based on the horror novel of the same name by Stephen King (1977) and for many it is the best horror movie in history. The Shining tells the story of Jack Torrance, a low-time writer who accepts the position of caretaker at the Overlook Hotel, an isolated place in the mountains of Colorado.

Over time and due to the influence of the evil that lives there, he will be immersed in a spiral of violence against his own wife and son. In parallel to the main plot, we can see other subplots full of symbolic representations, subliminal clues and psychological inquiries about human nature and evil.

Despite the initial cold reception at its premiere, little by little, The Shining has managed to win over the public and is now considered a true cult movie within horror cinema.

<![CDATA[Top 10 Horror Movies With The Devil And Demons That Show You The True Face Of Evil]]> https://gurugamer.com/movies/horror-movies-with-the-devil-14149 Thu, 05 Nov 2020 10:23:00 +0000 https://gurugamer.com/movies/horror-movies-with-the-devil-14149
The figure of the Devil is always iconic when it appears in horror movies. Here are top 10 horror movies with the Devil that will let you see the real evil.]]>

The master of evil has many different names, such as the Devil, Satan, Beelzebub, or Lucifer. In a general and conventional sense, they all represent an evil, tempting being that contradicts the concepts of goodness, love, and true belief in the divine. And the cinema has also represented this figure in different horror movies with the Devil.

Top 10 Horror Movies With The Devil That Reveal The True Face Of Evil

In the past, the West used to embody in the figure of the Devil certain pagan elements, extracted from the description of the satyr Pan from Greek mythology, which the Christian tradition connects with the image of the goat.

However, since cinema was invented, the Devil has been represented in very different ways, which makes it a changing motif, difficult to define. Sometimes, the character even appears very humanized, more complex, and with less deformed characteristics; giving him more complexity and depth in horror movies about the Devil.

Up next, we will look at the 10 best horror movies with the Devil that show the Devil in various ways, from classical to modern:

Top 10 Horror Movies with the Devil that Reveal the True Face of Evil

Table of Contents

 • 1. The Exorcist (1973)
 • 2. The Evil Dead (1981)
 • 3. Rosemary's Baby (1968)
 • 4. Omen III: The Final Conflict (1981)
 • 5. Angel Heart (1987)
 • 6. The Witches of Eastwick (1987)
 • 7. It (1990)
 • 8. The Prophecy (1995)
 • 9. The Devil's Advocate (1997)
 • 10. Constantine (2005)

1. The Exorcist (1973)

The Exorcist is one of the classics of horror movies and movies in general, not just horror movies with the Devil. It takes up the archetypal depiction of a person possessed by a demonic spirit, which little by little is losing their humanity and becoming a mere instrument of the Devil.

And indeed that is what happens to Linda Blair, who was only 14 years old at the time the movie was made. Directed by William Friedkin and starring Ellen Burstyn, this film uses the classical theme of the Devil to recreate it in a contemporary setting mixed with religious traditions, creating a dense and distressing climate.

2. The Evil Dead (1981)

This 80s classic comes from the mind of one of the most iconic directors of all time, Sam Raimi. Evil Dead is a story of teenagers going to the woods, messing with what they should not and dark supernatural forces do not miss an opportunity to mess with them.

The story begins, as we already mentioned, with a group of teenagers who travel to a lonely cabin in the forest. Once there, they find a mysterious book and decide to open it to read that it has to say. What happens is that, by doing that, they awaken a few ancient demons who want to possess them all and destroy their lives.

3. Rosemary's Baby (1968)

We are looking at one of the classics of the great director Roman Polanski and one of the great horror movies with the Devil of all time: Rosemary's Baby. Starring Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes, it tackles one of the most archetypal themes that revolve around the Devil: the woman pregnant with his child, who is the Antichrist.

Mia Farrow's character is the unfortunate one chosen for such a task. Through a satanic cult, she is deceived and driven to the brink of madness, before the terrifying truth is revealed to her. Anguish, paranoia, and suffocation produce this film that, once you have seen it, you will never forget.

4. Omen III: The Final Conflict (1981)

Here is the movie that wraps up the trilogy of The Omen. The Devil does not appear in person, but the figure of his herald, according to Christianity, the so-called Antichrist is the character Damien Thorn, masterfully played by Sam Neill. The appeal of the movie lies in presenting evil that is within famous political or economic figures who live among us today.

5. Angel Heart (1987)

This work has more police than horror overtones and the Devil is shown in the character of Louis Cyphre (Robert De Niro), pronounced "Louie-Cypher", phonetically similar to Lucifer. His representation is of a sophisticated malignancy: dark suit, long hair and nails, full beard and a striking staff.

During most of the film he is seated and only at the end of the movie does he reveal his true nature.

6. The Witches of Eastwick (1987)

In this adaptation of the novel of the same name by John Updike, a version of the Devil is presented in a tragicomic manner. His role has more than one presentation: a playboy demon, lover of the pleasures of life, such as food and wine, but especially of women.

Daryl Van Horne (Jack Nicholson) is an entertaining demon who indulges in the vagaries of the flesh and lives with three women, played by Susan Sarandon, Cher, and Michelle Pfeiffer. Quite a satyr in the good sense of the word.

7. It (1990)

Evil doesn't need to be interpreted with hideous figures as tradition dictates, such as this miniseries in which the demon takes the form of a clown and at the end of the play appears as a large spider. The Devil, or "It", as Stephen King wanted to suggest, can be anything; it may even lack a name but there is always a common denominator: it will be something terrifying that feeds on our deepest fears.

While It differs from the horror movies with the Devil on this list, you simply have to see Tim Curry bringing evil to life in this classic that sent chills through an entire generation.

8. The Prophecy (1995)

In this film Lucifer is played by Viggo Mortensen: A dark, evil, bloodthirsty being yet handsome and charming in his own way. The plot of the movie focuses on the war between the angels Gabriel and Michael, but the appearance of the Devil himself is the climax point of the movie.

9. The Devil's Advocate (1997)

One of the horror movies with Devil in the title on this list, The Devil's Advocate enters into moral and ethical dilemmas. What better than a neck and tie devil, who is a millionaire with a lot of power and played by Al Pacino? John Milton is a modern, hyperactive Devil in the guise of a sophisticated man who lives in the heart of New York.

This Devil, without losing the sense of evil, is an allegory of justice and temptation within the morass of politics and money, which will come into conflict with Kevin Lomax, a young lawyer played by Keanu Reeves.

10. Constantine (2005)

They don't beat around the bush in one of the most spectacular horror movies with the Devil. The Devil is known as one of his classic names: Satan, which in Hebrew means "the adversary." In this fantasy movie, the demon is played by Peter Stormare and is presented as a man with a haggard and tired face, curiously dressed in white and tinged with dementia.

Evil will appear again using the aesthetics of any human, who, although appearing as the leader of the demonic hosts on Earth, is surpassed in evil by the archangel Gabriel himself.

Despite what their job description says, clowns exist to haunt our nightmares. Here are the top 10 horror movies with clowns that confirm who they truly are.]]>

Who actually thought clowns would make good entertainers when most of us who have seen them would only develop coulrophobia, or fear of clowns? The fact that clowns scare us more than entertain us has made Pennywise an icon among horror movies with clowns, but he is not the only being with a painted face that has given us nightmares.

While lockdowns and quarantines are still underway in many places, let's take a look at the best horror movies with clowns to help spend your time while Halloween season is still ongoing even as the official date has passed. Here's a top 10 list of horror movies with clowns so that, if your fear allows it, you can see them alone at home:

Top 10 Horror Movies with Clowns to Watch and Hate Clowns Even More

Table of Contents

 • 1. It (1990, 2017 and 2019)
 • 2. Clown (2014)
 • 3. Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)
 • 4. Clownhouse (1989)
 • 5. Poltergeist
 • 6. Stitches (2013)
 • 7. Killjoy (2000)
 • 8. Zombieland
 • 9. 100 tears
 • 10. Gacy

1. It (1990, 2017 and 2019)

Obviously, in this list of horror movies of clowns, we have to talk about Pennywise. In the first on-screen incarnation of the monstrous creature wearing clown facepaint, Tim Curry made his mark with the party clown look and to this day we all have nightmares about the bathroom scene.

However, Bill Skarsgård was not far behind with his role in the 2017 and 2019 films. The Swedish actor even found new ways to disturb us with a dancing clown.

2. Clown (2014)

Before giving us Spider-Man: Homecoming, director Jon Watts made one of the most memorable horror movies with clowns on Netflix you could watch. The story follows a loving father who finds a clown outfit for his son's birthday party. However, he soon discovers that he is much more than a garment when he begins to undergo a terrible transformation.

3. Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)

In addition to being one of the horror movies with clowns that you must see, this has become a cult film. It focuses on an alien race that has the appearance of clowns that comes to invade Earth. Best of all, they have all sorts of circus weapons - popcorn guns, cotton candy cocoons, magic tricks - and they are deadly.

4. Clownhouse (1989)

Obviously on this list of horror movies with clowns is this slasher from the late 80s. It focuses on three mental institution patients who escaped and killed clowns from a circus and taking their identities. Just before Halloween, a trio of brothers meets these jesters without knowing what they really are.

5. Poltergeist

The jesters on this list don't need to be flesh and blood to cause nightmares. That is the case of Poltergeist's toy clown because although his screen time is very short, we all still remember the scene in which he stretches his arms to murder a child. That is definitely "life-long" trauma from clowns.

6. Stitches (2013)

Among the creepiest horror movies with clowns is this cinematic production inspired by the slashers of the 80s. The story focuses on a clown named Stitches who returns from the dead to take revenge on the group of children who killed him; so get ready to see gore and lots of black humor.

7. Killjoy (2000)

It may not be very well known, but this low-budget movie managed to generate four sequels focused on the demon Killjoy. The demon takes the shape of a clown and, in the first movie, he is invoked to avenge the murder of a teenager.

8. Zombieland (2009)

We know that it is not a horror movie with clowns because the entire movie is about zombies. However, we cannot ignore the appearance of the undead clown who appears at the climax of the movie to confront Columbus when the gang is trapped in a circus.

9. 100 Tears (2007)

Although it is an independent production, it is one of the horror films with clowns that you must see for the sheer terror. It focuses on Gurdy the Clown who is wrongly accused of rape. In revenge, he begins a hunt against those who wrongfully prosecuted him. However, his true evil comes out and a massacre based on hatred unfolded.

10. Gacy (2003)

We can't talk about horror movies with clowns without mentioning this one that is based on the serial killer John Wayne Gacy, also known as "Pogo the Clown." This is a man who caused terror in the 70s when the bodies of around 30 young people were found buried in the basement of his house.

Romero in the late 60s and 70s but there are also excellent more recent horror movies about zombie apocalypse capable of making our hair stand on end with zombies that are capable of ending everything they catch.

horror movies with zombies

There will be a bit of everything, including horror, suspense, and even humor.

Without further ado, here are the top 10 horror movies with zombie hordes you should be watching during Halloween:

Top 10 Horror Movies With Zombies to If You Are A Fan of The Walking Dead

Table of Contents

 • 1. Night of the Living Dead (1968)
 • 2. Zombie (1978)
 • 3. The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988)
 • 4. 28 Days Later (2002)
 • 5. Shaun of The Dead (2004)
 • 6. REC (2007)
 • 7. 28 Weeks Later (2007)
 • 8. Zombieland (2009)
 • 9. World War Z (2013)
 • 10. Train to Busan (2016)

1. Night of the Living Dead (1968)

This was the movie where everything to do with horror movies with zombies began: A great story, groundbreaking cinematography, and some stark and highly realistic scenes. This George A. Romero masterpiece continues to scare us just as it did at the beginning; it is distressing and it continues to give us goosebumps whenever we see it. If you have not seen this classic, we urge you to see it as soon as possible.

2. Dawn of The Dead (1978)

Another Romero classic, but this time in a shopping center, a trope that would later become a classic for many other movies and even video games. A fierce critique of consumerism, with great special effects for the time. It is still an extraordinary film that even now is still very relevant, and continues to be paradigm-shifting for the zombie genre.

3. The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988)

A Wes Craven movie where we see voodoo rites, zombies, black magic. Actor Bill Pullman has a hard time in this classic horror film for zombie genre lovers and ends up being buried alive when you least expect it.

4. 28 Days Later (2002)

One of the horror movies with zombies that revitalized the genre back in 2002, where the zombies almost completely took over and made us feel fear again in the cinema. Directed by Danny Boyle, the scenes of a completely devastated London and the chases are so believable that they make you feel you are a part of the story.

It is, without a doubt, one of the most harrowing and chilling movies in the genre.

5. Shaun of The Dead (2004)

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are two heroes by accident, two normal guys who suddenly ran into the zombie apocalypse and have to fight to survive. These two friends do not stop joking and bickering with one another while zombies are all over the place.

It is hilarious with lots of fun moments and generally very well done, and definitely one of the most recommended of the genre for its freshness and for being different from almost all the others on this list.

6. Rec (2007)

This is one of the many hidden gems within the genre in a language other than English. Rec, of Spanish origin, is a movie full of suspense, pure terror, and an atmosphere that creates paranoia and claustrophobia.

Angela Vidal, a reporter for a news channel, and her faithful cameraman, Pablo, are in charge of interviewing some firefighters during a night of work. When they receive an emergency call to go to a building in Barcelona where neighbors complain about a neighbor who locked herself in and wouldn't stop screaming, it all seems like a simple case.

However, the woman in question shows enormous strength when she is evicted, and one of the firefighters is injured with a bite on the neck. After the firefighter is brought to the hospital, they discover that the entire building is in quarantine, without any explanation.

7. 28 Weeks Later (2007)

It is the sequel to 28 Days Later after 6 months have passed since the outbreak of the epidemic in the British Isles. As good as the first and as exciting and heartbreaking, 28 Weeks Later is one of the great horror movies with zombies from the director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. And Robert Carlyle is still as magnificent as the first.

8. Zombieland (2009)

The most raucous movie on this list, Director Ruben Fleischer's debut couldn't have been more hilarious, which is a story about a rather cowardly kid named Columbus who meets a guy named Tallahassee in a world that has been filled with zombies. And from their madness breaks out, and is full of humor, blood, and more humor. And yes, Woody Harrelson is great in this.

9. World War Z (2013)

Directed by Marc Foster and starring Brad Pitt, this movie based on the novel by Max Brooks is pure fun, and the special effects are just great. Yes, we know that is not the best when it comes to quality on this list, but it is one of the most exciting and entertaining.

10. Train to Busan (2016)

A divorced father trying to get things right with his daughter, who boards a train as a deadly virus spreads across South Korea with nothing to stop it. And on top of that, all the anguish of the travelers on that train, which goes from Seoul to Busan, while they have to fight for their lives as the train is filled with the infected.

Train to Busan is a wonderful movie, fast-paced and so realistic when it comes to zombie behaviors that it makes you jump off the couch on many occasions.

horror movies that are based on a true story

For this year's Halloween, let's take a look at the top 5 horror movies based on true story whose events, if you have very bad luck, could happen to you as well:

Top 5 Horror Movies That Are Based On a True Story that Could Happen to You

Table of Contents

 • 1. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
 • 2. The Exorcist (1973)
 • 3. The Hills have Eyes (1977 and 2006)
 • 4. The Conjuring: The Warren File (2013)
 • 5. The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)

Horror Movies That Are Based On a True Story (1/3)

1. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

The movie is about young people from a small American town who have nightmares in which they are chased by a man with a glove with sharp blades. Some of them start to be killed in their sleep by that same man from their nightmares, Freddy Krueger. It is one of the first appearances of such an iconic psychopath in horror movies since the 80s.

Although Freddy is a fictional character, the director got the inspiration from reading a newspaper article about a group of refugees who survived the Killing Fields in Cambodia. These survivors reported that they had such intense nightmares that they did not want to sleep in order to not have them again.

One of the 21-year-olds stayed awake for a week because of his fear of nightmares and when he finally fell asleep, they found him dead.

2. The Exorcist (1973)

The movie, based on a novel, tells the story of the devilish possession of a twelve-year-old girl, and the exorcism to which she was later subjected. The author of the novel was inspired by an exorcism of a 14-year-old boy that occurred in 1949 that was reported by The Washington Post. The boy had sudden changes to his personality and several exorcisms were performed to "cure" him.

Horror Movies That Are Based On a True Story (2/3)

3. The Hills have Eyes (1977 and 2006)

In the movie, we see how a family is stranded in the Nevada Desert, USA. They then begin to be pursued and attacked by a group of deformed people, who became that way due to nuclear tests in the desert.

Although the misshapen clan never existed in the desert in real life, they were based on the mythical figure of "Alexander Sawney Bean". Many believe he lived with his family in a cave in the Scottish Highlands in the fifteenth or sixteenth century.

Supposedly, Bean and his wife lived for 25 years in a cave on the coast in Bennane Head with 8 children, 6 daughters, 18 grandchildren, and 14 grandchildren - many of whom were products of incest. The clan survived by abducting individuals or small groups during the night and taking the bodies to the cave to be eaten.

4. The Conjuring (2013)

Here is a story of a couple of demonologists hired to investigate the curse on a family in New England. The demonologists and Perron family, who claimed to be cursed by a witch from the 19th century, actually existed.

In 1971, the family moved to the colonial farm and the first phenomenon that occurred was the presence of a spirit that used to knock on the door of the house every night. From then on, the spirits began to manifest in different ways.

The most feared and violent spirit was one that was identified in a séance as Bathsheba, who wanted to take control over Carolyn, the mother of the Perron family. Bathsheba believed herself to be the owner of the house and that is why she was determined to chase them out of there.

horror movies that are based on a true story

The spirit approached her at night and they described her as a being that had a hideous and misshapen face, a broken neck, and head tilted to one side. According to local legends, Bathsheba was a woman suspected of being a witch and was accused of sacrificing a child as an offering to the devil.

More than two dozen mysterious deaths occurred on the property while she lived there. There have been two documented suicides (one of them a hanging in one of the barns), a poisoning, the rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl, two drownings, and the death of four men by freezing.

Horror Movies That Are Based On a True Story (3/3)

5. The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)

Out of all horror movies that are based on a true story, this story itself is among the top. The movie is based on the true story of Anneliese Michel, a German woman who endured a large number of exorcisms until she died a year later from malnutrition and dehydration. She lived a normal life until a German neurologist diagnosed her with epilepsy in 1968.

Due to severe epileptic seizures and depression, Anneliese was admitted to the hospital for treatment. Shortly after the epileptic attacks began, Anneliese began to see evil images during her daily prayers. She was obsessed with being possessed, and voices began to haunt her telling her that she was going to "burn in hell."

Three years later, her parents visited different pastors to request an exorcism but were rejected. The attacks did not abate and her demeanor became much more erratic. They finally took her home and she began to insult, attacked, and even bit her relatives. She refused to eat because she said that the demons forbade it.

She slept on the stone floor, ate spiders, flies, and coal, and drank her own urine. Finally, in 1975, the family got an exorcism done on her. They said that she had to be saved from various demons, including Lucifer, Judas Iscariot, Nero, Cain, Hitler (!?), and some other damned souls.

They spent a year practicing 1-2 exorcism sessions per week and more than 40 recordings were made during the process. But unfortunately, she did not survive the sessions. In the movie, the Catholic priest who performed the exorcisms is denounced for negligent homicide. The depiction of the exorcism in the movie leaves the viewer to make the decision as to whether it was all because of paranoia and religious extremism than because of real demons.
