If you want to start trying out JRPGs, the following titles are the easiest to get into.]]>

Since the 1980s, JRPGs have been a staple in the video game industry, beginning with the releases of titles like Dragon Quest in 1986 and the original Final Fantasy in 1987. Despite having a dedicated fan base, JRPGs might seem intimidating to newcomers. Given their extensive history spanning over three decades, it can be challenging to determine where to begin.

Every year, several outstanding JRPGs are released, many of which are part of long-running franchises with decades of history. In 2023, notable titles like Final Fantasy 16, Octopath Traveler 2, The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie, and Trinity Trigger have already made their debut, with more to come. However, for newcomers to the genre, the question remains: which JRPGs are the best starting points?

Pokemon

Although Pokémon stands as one of the most popular and successful video game franchises ever, it's often overlooked that it's a true JRPG series at its core. While its turn-based combat sets it apart from many other JRPGs, Pokémon unquestionably serves as an excellent entry point for newcomers to the genre due to its ease of learning.

As for which generation and release newcomers should prioritize, that's a challenging question to answer. The older GBA and Nintendo DS Pokémon games are widely regarded as the franchise's peak, but accessibility can be an issue. Consequently, most individuals may gravitate toward the offerings on the Nintendo Switch, specifically Scarlet and Violet. These titles reimagine the classic Pokémon formula within an open-world setting, and while they're not flawless, they come with their own set of advantages.

Persona 5 Royal

Persona 5 is a game that radiates sophistication and panache while maintaining its core substance. In a genre where most masterpieces lean towards traditional fantasy settings, Persona 5 stands out by immersing players in a contemporary Japanese backdrop accompanied by an incredibly stylish jazz-infused soundtrack.

Boasting exceptional characters and a compelling narrative, the game showcases the JRPG genre's ability to seamlessly merge combat, captivating storytelling, and a chic aesthetic. Although the original version is outstanding, Persona 5 Royal emerges as the ultimate rendition and should take precedence.

Dragon Quest 11

Available on most contemporary gaming platforms, Dragon Quest 11 serves as an outstanding entry point for those interested in exploring the JRPG genre. Brimming with enchantment, this game showcases stunning visuals and iconic character designs crafted by Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball Z.

Dragon Quest 11

Regarding its combat mechanics, Dragon Quest 11 employs a conventional turn-based system while offering players the liberty to customize their party composition, empowering them to utilize their preferred characters.

Chrono Trigger

Frequently hailed as one of the finest JRPGs ever created, Chrono Trigger revolves around time travel within its in-game world. Thanks to its exceptional pacing, charming characters designed by Akira Toriyama, and user-friendly combat system, Chrono Trigger stands as an ideal choice for introducing players to the genre with one of its top-tier games.

Furthermore, the game provides a plethora of character-focused side quests for those seeking deeper engagement with the cast, along with multiple endings to satisfy players in search of replayability.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Although the tactical JRPG genre is often criticized for its steep learning curve, the latest installment in the Fire Emblem series, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, is notably accessible to newcomers. It offers a forgiving level of difficulty and introduces a casual mode that removes the traditional "perma-death" feature, resulting in a more flexible gameplay experience compared to other Fire Emblem titles.

In this game, players take on the role of a professor at Garreg Mach Monastery, where they have the opportunity to instruct and develop their students, enabling them to engage in battles according to the player's preferences.

Tales of Vesperia

If you're seeking a JRPG that breaks away from turn-based combat, Tales of Vesperia might be the perfect choice. This action RPG boasts a memorable ensemble of characters and uniquely permits each party member to be controlled by a different player, making it possible for up to four players to enjoy the game simultaneously.

While the campaign may initially have a somewhat leisurely beginning, it gradually evolves into an undeniably captivating adventure. Notably, the protagonist, Yuri Lowell, is a strong contender for the title of the franchise's finest character.

Final Fantasy 6

When it comes to the timeless classics of the Final Fantasy franchise, if you're aiming for an authentic and enduring experience that showcases the essence of what the series represents, consider starting with Final Fantasy 6. This game, boasting one of the most extensive rosters of playable party members in the series, employs the active-time battle system that has become synonymous with the franchise.

Furthermore, Final Fantasy 6 boasts one of the most remarkable character ensembles in the series. Its narrative structure frequently shifts the spotlight onto different party members throughout the game's duration, enhancing the depth and engagement of the storytelling.

Octopath Traveler

Debuting in 2018, Octopath Traveler is a contemporary title heavily influenced by JRPGs from the 1990s. It embraces a turn-based combat system and combines sprite-based graphics with a 3D lighting engine, resulting in a distinctive visual style that harmonizes elements from both past and present gaming eras.

Players are granted the initial choice of eight characters, each possessing their own unique story and abilities, allowing them to select a starting point that aligns with their preferences. Octopath Traveler 2 closely resembles its predecessor, although it incorporates greater interaction among party members, addressing one of the most commonly cited criticisms of the original game.

Final Fantasy 7

Final Fantasy 7 stands as one of the most iconic JRPGs in gaming history. While the original PS1 version remains a classic turn-based masterpiece, Final Fantasy 7 Remake serves as an excellent entry point for newcomers to the action JRPG genre.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake
Final Fantasy 7 Remake

With impressive visuals and dynamic combat, the game retains the essence of Final Fantasy 7 while embracing an alternative action-based approach that may appeal to players who aren't fond of turn-based combat. For fans who have fond memories of Square's 1997 release, the remake does take some creative liberties, so it's not an exact replica of the original experience. Moreover, a sequel titled Rebirth has been confirmed for an early 2024 release.

Super Mario RPG

Launched in 1996, Super Mario RPG was a collaboration between Square and Nintendo, introducing the Mario universe to the realm of classic JRPGs.

Although it doesn't pose an exceptionally challenging gameplay experience, the game exudes a delightful charm, making it an ideal entry for Nintendo enthusiasts who have yet to explore the world of JRPGs. Furthermore, given its development by Square, the game boasts the level of polish and craftsmanship that one would naturally anticipate.

These JRPGs provide players with the opportunity to explore and appreciate Japan's history while enjoying immersive gameplay and captivating narratives.]]>

JRPGs offer an incredibly enjoyable gaming experience, captivating players with their immersive worlds and compelling narratives. While the genre is often associated with high fantasy settings and the effective use of common tropes, many people mistakenly believe that JRPGs do not delve into real historical aspects.

However, this misconception couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, there are several JRPGs that provide opportunities for fans to explore and learn about Japanese history. These games showcase the fascinating stories that have shaped Japan's identity, emphasizing the values of honor and commitment that were held in high regard during different periods. Although some liberties may be taken with historical accuracy for the sake of the plot, players will still appreciate the educational aspect and the richness of Japan's historical background.

Here are some notable JRPGs that offer insights into Japanese history:

Sakuna: Of Rice And Ruin

Combining sidescrolling action and simulation gameplay, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin presents a unique experience that should not be overlooked by JRPG enthusiasts. While the idea of cultivating rice might not immediately sound exciting, it's the game's charming characters and presentation that make it a truly enjoyable playthrough. The action-oriented combat complements the simulation gameplay, providing a refreshing change of pace. Furthermore, the world of Sakuna is steeped in Japanese mythology, with hints of history sprinkled throughout.

Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha VS The Soulless Army

While many video games have successfully adapted various historical periods of Japan, the Taisho period has received relatively less representation. However, Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha VS The Soulless Army, a spinoff from Atlus' renowned Shin Megami Tensei series, sheds light on this era. Departing from its predecessors, the game features real-time combat and a captivating plot set in the past. Players will be enthralled by the great protagonist, Raidou Kuzunoha, and appreciate the unique elements this title brings to the table.

Onimusha Tactics

The Onimusha series heavily incorporates Japanese history, offering players an action-packed experience with a fixed camera perspective and a deep and rewarding combat system. While the series has remained dormant for some time, Onimusha Tactics represents a more experimental entry. This particular game, exclusive to a Nintendo console, provides a strong gameplay loop, even though its narrative may not be as compelling.

Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines

Regrettably, only the second installment of the Oreshika series has been localized for Western audiences, leaving fans longing for the first game's availability. However, the localized title still delivers a magical experience. The games are set a century apart and feature separate stories. The focus revolves around multiple generations of a cursed bloodline that players must guide and help overcome their debilitating fate. With each generation's lifespan limited to a mere two years, players must make the most of their time and resources, creating an intriguing premise that keeps them engaged throughout.

About JRPGs vs WRPGs

JRPGs are usually very story-focused, almost always with a pre-set protagonist with a pre-set history and personality, usually with a given or default name. They usually focus much more on numbers and dice rolls than player input, and are frequently turn based or have some kind of turn-based function.

WRPGs are much more player-focused, usually with an "avatar" type protagonist who the player gets to name and design, and even decide their own personality - the protagonist in a WRPG is not a unique character, but rather an avatar for the player to insert themselves into the world. WRPG gameplay tends to be less number-focused and more skill-based, and the gameplay centers around exploring the world and doing whatever you want to do rather than following an extremely linear story progression. Gameplay is often more actiony and not usually turn based.

These are different genres because they are VERY distinct gameplay styles - they are as different as a first person shooter and a third person shooter. Both are shooters but they both have very distinct elements to their gameplay that affects the experience - same is true here.

They're only named as such for the same reason that Italian food is called Italian food - the JRPG style was most popularized in Japan, with series like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Megami Tensei. The WRPG is popularized in the west with things like Elder Scrolls, Fallout, the Witcher, and Bioware's games.

<![CDATA[Starter Guide For Honkai Star Rail Exploration And Combat System]]> https://gurugamer.com/mobile-games/starter-guide-for-honkai-star-rail-exploration-and-combat-system-22000 Mon, 17 Apr 2023 03:17:00 +0000 https://gurugamer.com/mobile-games/starter-guide-for-honkai-star-rail-exploration-and-combat-system-22000
Players that have played any traditional JRPGs, for instance, will understand the combat system in Honkai: Star Rail quite quickly.]]>

Honkai: Star Rail follows the turn-based RPG gameplay model which is similar to classic JRPGs like the Final Fantasy series. The game is divided into two modes: overworld and battle. During the overworld mode, you explore the map and encounter enemy groups, and once you engage them, you will enter the battle mode where you have to defeat them in turn-based combat.

Honkai Star Rail Exploration

Gamers have the freedom to wander and investigate diverse sections of the Honkai: Star Rail areas, in search of valuable chests, adversaries, puzzles, and other surprises. Nonetheless, each region constitutes an autonomous domain, requiring a loading screen to transit from one zone to another.

Underworld Beta Screenshot
Honkai Star Rail

While embarking on your adventure, you will designate a sole member from the four-person crew as your active character. The active character is the one visible on the screen that you manage. You have the flexibility to switch between active characters anytime when you are not engaged in combat.

How to initiate battles

Beyond the urban regions, adversaries will be wandering around the terrain, ready to become hostile and pursue you when you come near them.

About 1
Turn based combat

If you want to engage in a fight while exploring, simply move towards an enemy and trigger your Basic Attack capability.

Certain Characters possess a Technique skill that can serve as a means to trigger a battle, and when employed for this purpose, it will prompt the Character to launch a unique attack at the beginning of the confrontation. However, using a Character's Technique ability to commence a fight will deplete a Technique charge. You are capable of stocking up to 4 (3 initially) Technique charges, and to replenish them, you can break purple receptacles in the terrain. Breaking one of these containers will recover 2 Technique charges. You can typically discover these containers close to teleportation spots (e.g., Space Anchors and Calyx entrances) that are situated beyond the city areas.

You can also trigger a battle if an adversary that is pursuing you catches up. If you fail to strike them with your Basic Attack or Technique skill before they reach you, you will be drawn into a confrontation under the "Ambushed" condition. Under this circumstance, the enemy will gain the first turn before you can act.

Honkai Star Rail Combat System

Honkai: Star Rail features a combat system inspired by the JRPG genre, which is turn-based. You create a team composed of four Characters and bring them into battle. During combat, Characters and foes will execute actions in a fixed sequence that hinges on their Speed attribute. Moreover, the Speed attribute governs the duration of time before they can act once more.

Pre-Combat

While exploring the terrain, striking the roaming foes or being caught by them will trigger a battle sequence. The outcome of the fight may favor either your team or the enemy, depending on how it was instigated.

Star Rail
Honkai Star Rail characters

If you begin the confrontation by launching an attack with either the Basic Attack or Technique ability, the battle will ensue as usual. However, if the attribute of the operative character that initiates the fight corresponds to the weakness of the enemy, the enemy will begin the battle under the "Weakness" condition. Starting a battle in this state will lower the enemy's Toughness meter, facilitating the process of Weakness Break. In essence, this will make it easier for your team to inflict damage on the enemy.

On the other hand, if a foe catches up to you, and you cannot land an attack using the Basic Attack or Technique ability before they reach you, you will enter the "Ambushed" state when the fight begins. In this state, the enemy will have the first turn.

For additional information regarding enemy elemental weaknesses and Weakness Break, refer to the "Enemies" section located below.

Player Actions

During a Character’s turn, they are able to take one of the following actions:

  • Use Basic Attack ability
  • Use Skill ability
    • Using a Skill ability consumes Skill Point(s).
    • Skills Points can be generated primarily by using the Battle Attack ability.
    • You can hold up to a maximum of 5 Skill Points and they are shared between the whole team.
    • You cannot activate a Skill ability if you do not have any Skill Points.
  • Use Ultimate ability if it is fully charged
    • Using an Ultimate ability during the Character’s turn does not end that Character’s turn. The Character will use the Ultimate ability immediately, then you will be able to select another action for them to use.
    • Ultimate abilities can also be used when it is not currently the Character’s turn. If used in such a way, then the Character will immediately activate their Ultimate ability after the current turn ends. This allows you to interrupt the normal turn order flow. Multiple Ultimates can also be chained in this way which can lead to very explosive out of turn damage.
    • Ultimate abilities cost a certain amount of Energy to activate. Energy can be gained via the following actions:
      • Using Basic Attack ability
      • Using Skill ability
      • Using Ultimate ability
      • Defeating enemies
      • Characters and Light Cones effects
    • The amount of Energy gained from each of the actions listed above can be increased by increasing the Character’s Energy Restoration Rate stat.

Enemies

Enemies in Honkai: Star Rail possess two distinct meters that gauge their durability: HP and Toughness.

Honkai Star Rail Characters Skills
Having a character that counters enemies weakness is vital.

The HP meter is indicated by the red bar and represents the amount of damage that they can sustain before being defeated in combat. The HP bar decreases every time the unit receives damage.

In contrast, the Toughness meter (the white bar) can only be reduced by attacks that utilize the elements that the enemy is vulnerable to.

The Weakness Break for each element are as follows:

  • Physical - Bleed
    • Deals additional physical damage and apply the Bleed effect (Physical DoT)
  • Fire - Burn
    • Deals additional fire damage and apply the Burn effect (Fire DoT)
  • Ice - Frozen
    • Freezes the enemy, preventing it from taking any actions and apply an Ice DoT
  • Lightning - Shock
    • Deals additional lightning damage and apply the Shock effect (Lightning DoT)
  • Wind - Wind Shear
    • Deals additional wind damage and apply the Wind Shear effect (Wind DoT)
  • Quantum - Entanglement
    • Applies the Entanglement effect (Pushes the enemy back in the turn order and dealing Quantum DoT)
  • Imaginary - Imprisonment
    • Applies the Imprisonment effect (Pushes the enemy back in the turn order and reduces the enemy’s Speed)

When an adversary is broken, its Toughness will stay at 0, and additional strikes of an element to which the enemy is vulnerable will have no further consequences. A broken enemy will return to its normal state on its next turn. Its Toughness will be completely restored, and it can be Weakness Broken once more.

10. Konosuba: Fantastic Days

Konosuba: Fantastic Days is a mobile RPG based on the popular Konosuba anime series. In the game, players can collect and control characters from the anime and use them to battle against enemies.

Wallpaper Konosuba
Konosuba: Fantastic Days

The graphics in Konosuba Fantastic Days are typical for mobile games of its kind, but the game is improved by its anime-style cutscenes that make the experience more exciting and connected to the anime series.

The gameplay is similar to other gacha games, but with its own twist. The combat is in real-time, with each character having three skills and a Super. Skills can be used anytime as long as they are not on cooldown, while the Super takes some time to charge. The combat also incorporates the quirks of each character, such as Darkness's tendency to miss, which is a delight for fans, but new players may find it confusing.

The story is solid and starts with a surprise as the gang reminisces about old times before jumping into their usual hijinks. The tutorial on combat mechanics follows as the gang tries to save Aqua from a giant frog.

Good JRPGs are usually part of a long series with multiple entries, however, there are exceptions to this rule.]]>

The JRPG franchises of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Pokemon remain popular to this day. Although there are numerous ongoing series in the JRPG genre, there are also many individual games that were not made into a long-running franchise or received any sequels.

Several of these games lack spiritual successors, but they have inspired newer games. With so many individual JRPGs over the past few decades, it's challenging to know all of them, and the best ones will vary from person to person. Below are some lesser-known JRPGs you may have overlooked.

1. Skies of Arcadia

Skies of Arcadia was initially released for the Dreamcast by Sega and developed by Overworks in 2000. The game is set in the world of Arcadia, where all the continents are floating in the sky. The plot revolves around the Blue Rogues, a group of air pirates searching for the Moon Crystals to prevent the Valua empire's conquest.

The game features typical turn-based combat mechanics found in JRPGs, as well as airship battles that allow players to use their ship's weapons. Although plans were made to port the game to other platforms, Skies of Arcadia has only been re-released as Skies of Arcadia: Legends for the GameCube. However, there is hope that the game may eventually be available on other platforms.

2. Lost Odyssey

Blue Dragon, a JRPG developed by Mistwalker, had two spin-off titles for the Nintendo DS, but Mistwalker's other exclusive Xbox 360 JRPG, Lost Odyssey, never had any sequels or spin-offs. Lost Odyssey's protagonist is Kaim, an amnesiac immortal man, who is searching for the cause of his memory loss. The game employs turn-based combat similar to other JRPGs, but it also includes an "Aim Ring System" that enables players to add extra effects to character attacks through timed button presses.

Lost Odyssey was well-received, but some criticized its more conventional gameplay. Nevertheless, the game performed well commercially. It is currently available through the backward compatibility feature on Xbox Series X/S.

3. Radiant Historia

Radiant Historia was initially developed by Atlus for the Nintendo DS in 2011, with a remake for the Nintendo 3DS in 2017. The game's setting is the fictional continent of Vainqueur, which is undergoing desertification due to the Sand Plague. The disease turns those who contract it into sand. After receiving a book called the "White Chronicle," the main character, Stocke, learns he can time travel and alter the past.

Radiant Historia

Radiant Historia includes turn-based battles on a three-by-three grid and includes features that are typical of turn-based JRPGs and tactical games. There is no assurance that it will be re-released, but Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology is currently available on the Nintendo 3DS eShop.

4. The Legend of Dragoon

Team Japan developed The Legend of Dragoon, which premiered for the original PlayStation in 1999 in Japan, 2000 in North America, and 2001 in Europe. The game uses a classic turn-based battle system, but it also incorporates quick-time events. When certain events occur in the game's story, party members gain the ability to transform into a Dragoon, a hybrid of human and dragon, after obtaining a Dragoon spirit. The game's title derives from this concept.

The Legend Of Dragoon 2

At the time of its release, The Legend of Dragoon received mixed to average reviews, with some critics finding it too conventional and lacking in innovation for the genre. Despite its enthusiastic fanbase, the game has never been re-released on other platforms.

5. The Last Story

The Last Story, a highly acclaimed JRPG from Mistwalker, was one of three Wii games that were part of Operation Rainfall. It was released in Japan in 2011 and in North America, Europe, and Australia in 2012. In the game, the protagonist Zael and his party become embroiled in a conflict between the human empire and the Gurak. Unlike most JRPGs, only Zael is a playable character, and the player gives commands to the rest of the party, who are controlled by AI. Unfortunately, The Last Story has never been re-released on other consoles, and it's unlikely that it will receive a remastered version in the future.

6. Folklore

Folklore is an action RPG exclusive to the PlayStation 3, released in 2007 and developed by Game Republic Inc. The game is based on Irish mythology and follows two protagonists with distinct play styles, both exploring the netherworld for different reasons. They have the ability to absorb creatures they defeat to gain their powers.

Folklore

Although Irish mythology has appeared in games before, it is not as common in JRPGs as it is in Folklore. Despite receiving positive reviews, the game's lackluster sales led to the cancellation of a planned sequel. At present, Folklore is only playable on the PlayStation 3.

7. Resonance of Fate

Tri-Ace, known mainly for the Star Ocean series, released a non-related JRPG for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2010 called Resonance of Fate. The game combines real-time and turn-based gameplay by implementing the "tri-attack battle system," which allows party characters to perform various actions based on the number of action points they possess. Additionally, the charging system and different types of damage, which vary depending on the weapons used, enhance the combat experience.

Resonance of Fate

Resonance of Fate stands out from other JRPGs because the weapons in the game are mostly different types of guns. The game received a 4K remaster for PlayStation 4 and PC in 2018, adding to its popularity.

8. Infinite Space

In contrast to other science fiction JRPGs, the 2009 Nintendo DS game Infinite Space mainly focuses on spaceship battles instead of party-based combat. As a result, characters experience fatigue after traveling between galaxies and must stop at various planets or spaceports to replenish their energy, or their performance in battle will suffer.

Infinite Space

Despite receiving positive reviews, Infinite Space's sales were mediocre, which is likely the reason why there was never a follow-up. The game includes mercenaries, regions of unstable space-time, ancient artifacts, empires, federations, and other elements, making it an often-overlooked JRPG that sci-fi enthusiasts would appreciate.

9. Eternal Sonata

Eternal Sonata, developed by tri-crescendo for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2008, is a game with a unique setting. The game takes place in a fictional dream world that composer Frédéric Chopin allegedly saw on his deathbed. This dream world is influenced by Chopin's music and life, with some of his compositions included in the soundtrack. Each character who joins Chopin's party is named after a different musical term. The game is well-loved and achieves its goal of introducing Chopin's life and music to JRPG fans, as well as addressing societal issues. A remastered version could potentially attract an even larger fanbase.

10. Rogue Galaxy

In 2005, Level-5 developed Rogue Galaxy, a space-faring adventure game exclusively for PlayStation 2. The game was praised by players during its initial international release for its stunning graphics and visually appealing art style, which is characteristic of other Level-5 games. However, there were mixed opinions about the combat mechanics, which were unique but repetitive in nature.

Rogue Galaxy

Some fans were disappointed with the story's lack of depth, as well as the character backstories, which were not as fleshed out compared to other JRPGs released during the same period. Despite these criticisms, Rogue Galaxy was received positively, and it was digitally re-released for PlayStation 4 in 2015.

JRPGs are not usually known for their challenging difficulty, as most of them are turn-based and encourage grinding. However, these bosses are exceptions to the norm.]]>

The boss battles in JRPGs can either make or break the gaming experience for us. In this genre, bosses are notoriously difficult, sometimes to the point where we may consider giving up. However, their challenging nature motivates us to keep trying, even if it takes us multiple attempts to overcome them.

In addition to the captivating storylines and intricate gameplay, the boss battles in JRPGs are a crucial component of the genre. These bosses possess extraordinary abilities and striking character designs that have revolutionized how we perceive intense combat in video games. Nonetheless, among all the JRPG bosses, there are some whose battles can be so demanding that they may take an entire day to defeat.

1. Penance (Final Fantasy 10)

Among the challenging bosses in JRPGs, Final Fantasy 10's Penance is considered to be one of the most formidable. Penance is acknowledged as the most powerful super boss in all versions of the game, boasting an incredible 12 million HP and highly damaging attacks.

Sa 1
Penance

Defeating Penance involves overcoming two distinct stages. In the first stage, Penance must be reduced to below 3 million HP, after which it will retaliate with Immolation, which drains all of your MP. With its massive HP alone, Penance is undoubtedly an intimidating foe. However, if you're brave enough to take it on, strategic preparation and targeting its limbs can be the key to victory.

2. Demi-Fiend (Shin Megami Tensei 5)

Even when playing on the easy difficulty mode in Shin Megami Tensei 5, it's still highly likely that you'll struggle to defeat Demi-Fiend's boss fight, potentially losing multiple times. The challenging nature of the battle is primarily due to the powerful abilities Demi-Fiend possesses.

SadDemi-Fiend
Demi-Fiend

Demi-Fiend is capable of cutting your turns in half and has few weaknesses that can be exploited. Additionally, he can unleash an attack that can wipe out your entire team with a single hit, and he's capable of healing himself and his allies when they're at half HP. One potential strategy to defeat him is to minimize the number of turns used and rely on demons to assist in the fight. However, this approach is far from straightforward, given the potent skills Demi-Fiend possesses.

3. Luca Blight (Suikoden 2)

Luca Blight is a malevolent and vicious individual at his core, with little to no regard for human life. His merciless nature makes him an incredibly difficult boss to defeat in Suikoden 2. With a high HP level, it's essential to deal damage quickly, as he can easily decimate your party in a matter of seconds.

Screen Shot 2023 03 15 At 2 51 10 Am
Luca Blight

During his turn, Luca can execute three different attacks, making it challenging to plan your strategy. Additionally, it's often difficult to predict his next move, forcing you to use your most potent abilities to stand a chance of emerging victorious.

4. Lavos (Chrono Trigger)

Lavos is a well-known and revered boss fight in the realm of JRPGs. Initially, it's impossible to defeat Lavos the first time you encounter it, unless you're playing on New Game +. However, despite the challenging road, engaging Lavos in a second battle can be quite entertaining, particularly when utilizing your accumulated powers.

Tumblr 9335096f3ee749b6c43fb47d3971f688 23763d9e 1
Lavos

The fight against Lavos comprises of multiple phases designed to test your abilities, with each phase imitating certain bosses you've encountered throughout Chrono Trigger. Successfully passing these tests results in Lavos' HP decreasing, and it will revert to using its own abilities. However, this isn't the end, as there is still much more to overcome. One effective strategy to win the fight is to attack Lavos' limbs and consistently use magic to inflict damage.

5. Nyx Avatar (Persona 3)

Nyx Avatar is an enigmatic and terrifying figure in Persona 3, with its identity being one of the most significant mysteries in the game. The fight against this boss is not only lengthy, comprising of fourteen phases, but also incredibly challenging.

Nyxavatar
Nyx Avatar

The time it takes to complete this battle only scratches the surface of why it's a formidable JRPG boss fight. When Nyx Avatar's HP drops below a certain point, it will use two special skills that can leave you feeling helpless: Moonless Gown and Night Queen. The former reflects all attacks, while the latter deals heavy damage to your entire party. Ultimately, defeating this boss requires significant endurance and perseverance.

6. Seven Heroes Fusion (Romancing SaGa 2)

The Seven Heroes act as the main antagonists in Romancing SaGa 2. As you progress through the game, you'll have to face each of them, and defeating them requires you to overcome various challenges. But it's not until the end of the game that these bosses combine into a single, monstrous entity.

Romancing Saga 2 Switch Review Swift Succession 2
Seven Heroes Fusion

Since this battle is the final boss, you have the opportunity to give it your all and put all your skills to the test. However, it's not an easy fight, as this fusion has access to all of the devastating signature moves from each of the Seven Heroes. To succeed, you'll need to carefully plan the order in which you take out each hero and rely on most spells, except for Dark magic.

7. Giygas (EarthBound)

Giygas, the primary antagonist in EarthBound, stands out from the game's colorful and lighthearted setting as a malevolent force that instills fear in players. Known as the "Embodiment of Evil," Giygas seeks to plunge reality into eternal darkness. The boss fight against Giygas consists of five phases. It begins with Giygas trapped inside the Devil's Machine, where he unleashes his full power in a chaotic and unpredictable manner. None of the usual attacking strategies work against him, and the only way to defeat him is through Paula's unique ability to Pray.

In the end, the only way to defeat Giygas is for Paula to lead everyone in the game, including your party and all those on Earth, in prayer.

8. Lingering Will (Kingdom Hearts 2.5 ReMIX)

Lingering Will is a secret boss in Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX, located in the Keyblade Graveyard after unlocking "The Gathering." What makes this boss so challenging is that there is no one strategy to defeat him, leaving the player to rely solely on their skills, items, and magic.

Dsadas 1
Lingering Will

Although Lingering Will may appear intimidating on the surface, it is his backstory that is truly frightening. He is essentially a shell of his former self, a mystical being made up of Terra's lingering thoughts and desires. As a result, his motivations and actions are difficult to comprehend.

9. Redrum (Xenogears)

Xenogears is a game that features a fascinating world with a very dangerous enemy called Redrum. You can find Redrum in the Nortune sewers, and he stands tall, covered in red fur bandages. He is the first boss in the game who can instantly kill your party and has more HP than other ground bosses.

Screen Shot 2023 03 15 At 2 43 38 Am
Redrum

Before encountering Redrum, the game is easy, and you won't face much trouble on your journey. As a result, you may not be fully prepared for this fight because everything was so easy before. The key to defeating Redrum is using Zetasols.

10. Riku's Second Encounter (Kingdom Hearts)

Upon meeting Riku again in Hollow Bastion in Kingdom Hearts, players are presented with a more challenging boss battle than before. In the original version of the game, this fight was particularly difficult due to Riku's swift and powerful attacks, as well as the unavoidable cutscene that played every time you lost. Although it is slightly less challenging in the Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX, it still requires careful dodging and strategic use of combo attacks to be successful.

JRPGs are one of the best genres if you want a deep and story-focused role-playing experience. Here is a list of the top 6 JRPGs to play on PC in 2022.]]>

Amongst the many gaming genres, JRPG is probably one of the oldest and most enduring. They usually focus on storytelling, with some of the best stories ever witnessed in the history of gaming.

In this article, Gurugamer is going to showcase the top 5 best JRPGs to play on PC in 2023.

1. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade is a twist on the original cult classic that has been reimagined with cutting-edge graphics, all-new game mechanics, and fast-paced combat.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade

The story remains entirely faithful to the original game, with some content in between to help bolster it. The writing is superb, and the overall story is perfect, to say the least. Side quests are the contrast here, as they are totally devoid of personality and storyline and seem to act purely as filler for the entirety of the experience. Please keep in mind that you only get to play as 4 of the total party in the entirety of this game, and it consists of Cloud, Barret, Tifa and Aerith.

Ff7r Intergrade Pc Cloud Small Jpeg 0

The remake is a decent rendition of the original game in nearly every aspect. Memorable boss fights return with new mechanics to learn and master that pose significant challenges. The alternate game mode provided called "classic" makes the game more reminiscent of the original and closer to the traditional turn-based gameplay.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade 1

Materia and equipment are impressive concepts that have remained the same and allow you to customize your heroes to your own liking and build them how you see fit. Materia is essentially the magic in Final Fantasy 7, taking the shape of colored orbs that give you special abilities when equipped that also bolster your individual stats.

2. Persona 4 Golden

You can call this a JRPG. You can call this Anime. You can call this a dungeon crawler, a visual novel, or even a Mystery if you'd like. These are all true. But beyond all of that, it's a friendship simulator, one that has never been done this well until its release or ever since. There really is nothing like it.

Game4v Persona 4 Golden Len Steam 4
Persona 4 Golden

Great characters you really feel attached to. There is not a single main character that I dislike (something that is extremely rare). The story, in my opinion, it is very happy and sad at the same time. The story definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat. On PC to be enjoyed with 100+fps animations, full-resolution textures, and 200% resolution scaling for extra crispiness.

P4g Gameplay
Turn-Based gameplay

Lots of stuff to do besides battles, you live the life of a high-schooler in a very real sense. You play each day of the school year and can perform various activities such as fishing, eating in fast-food restaurants, and hanging out with friends and acquaintances - the latter being a defining trait of Persona a directly influences your gameplay. Some people in the game have a 'Social link' - a bond the protagonist shares with the character. The player gets rewarded for having stronger bonds, especially with your teammates. If you end up struggling in a battle, fuse higher-level personae/persona's with different skills. Usually, you can find a persona that resists the element of the attacks a major boss uses early on.

3. Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Yakuza: Like a Dragon the newest game in the series keeps the old vibes alive but reinvents itself with new elements at the same time.

Like A Dragon
Yakuza: Like a Dragon

The combat is really refreshing after 7 games with beat 'em up combat. You can play with 7 characters throughout the story, with half of them getting unlocked via progression and minigames. While the combat is turn-based, it doesn't feel slow or clunky. The punches, kicks, shots feel impactful and fluent. Abilities that deal damage always have a little quick time event that makes every fight more engaging and active.

Yakuza
Turn based gameplay

And now the final biggest thing would probably be the characters: Ichiban is a very strong follow-up to Kiryu. He possesses the same morals and such as Kiryu, but he's a charming dork instead of a stoic titan. It's very weird playing as Kiryu for so many games and feeling unstoppable, but in this game, as Ichiban, you learn what it's like to be one of the weaker characters in Yakuza's lore. To me, Ichiban is your average likable and relatable silent JRPG protagonist, such as a Persona protagonist, but he has an actual in-lore personality and one that absolutely dominates every time he's on screen.

4. Tales of ARISE

It feels like Tales of Arise finally got that budget Zestiria and Berseria were lacking. Arise no longer targets PS3 as its main platform, so the overall presentation is mind-blowingly miles away from its predecessors. I'm familiar with all PS1 and PC Tales Of titles, along with recent BANDAI NAMCO action jRPGs like SCARLET NEXUS and CODE VEIN.

Tales Of Arise Hd Wallpaper 1920x1080 Uhdpaper Com
Tales of ARISE

Overall, it is an excellent title for those that have never touched the franchise. The game explains all the mechanics and there are no mind-numbing complex systems to ruin your experience. Most of the titles are stand-alone in terms of story, so you won't be spoiling yourself.

Tales Of Arise 5cfb7b72a2fd5
Tales of ARISE is spectacular

The visuals are heavily stylized, the game was advertised to have an "Atmospheric Shader" and I would say that along with image sharpening the results are impressive! All areas of the game have respectable backdrops that are often screenshot-worthy. Gone are the days of running around in 10 reskins of same-looking modular caves! All areas of the game feel like they were hand-crafted, and this level of quality persists throughout most of the game.

Tales Of Arise
The party members

Previous games suffered badly from the dungeon design cheapness, and that feeling persisted throughout the whole journey. Combat is polished and feels smooth. The more story is progressed, the more mechanics are unlocked, so I wouldn't recommend grinding in the same spot. Since the mechanics are unlocked gradually, the player gets enough breathing room to practice. Each main party member can be controlled at any time, so you can pick your favorite fighting style.

5. DRAGON QUEST XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

Dragon Quest XI is nothing short of legendary and will forever live among the greatest games I have ever played.

Dragon Quest 11
DRAGON QUEST XI

The Dragon Quest saga is the root of every JRPG ever made, and as such, bears tradition as a badge of pride. Where today's trends go towards fast-paced action-oriented flashy games, DQ11 is a slow burn, a sprawling epic of hundreds of hours, tons of stories, and a world to leisurely savor. Its mechanics, while simple - never straying too far from the original formula - are enough to keep the game going. With lots of sidequests, activities, and a story that never rushes but never stops, you are always focused on the adventure ahead of you. No fancy tricks or trendy modernities.

Dragon Quest 11 Main Dude Feature
The protagonist

The story is the very definition of an epic. It reveals a world most complex than it seems at first glance, it reunites the whole saga beautifully and its incredible twists - which I wouldn't dare spoil here - are breathtaking. This is, above all, a love letter to the Dragon Quest saga, and to JRPGS. It is all that defines the genre... only cranked up to eleven.

6. Persona 5 Royal

When Final Fantasy XV launched back in 2016 it started with a message - "A Final Fantasy for Fans and First-Timers”. And while it can be argued if that is true in regards to the FF franchise, I feel that saying works really well for Persona 5. If you never played a Persona title, you can jump straight away without any fear, and what you’ll find is a game that is incredibly addictive and it definitely deserves the title “one of the best JRPGS of all time”.

Persona 5 The Royal 1
Persona 5 Royal

On a personal level, Persona 5 is one of my favorite games of all time, I’ve played through it numerous times and I still can’t believe that I’m doing it right now on PC. Something that was a pipe dream years ago turned into reality and I never would’ve missed the opportunity to support Atlus’s decision to finally put the game on Steam. I still can’t quite comprehend how much the series has grown since that fateful day in late 2007 when I was introduced to Persona 3 by a close friend. It was like nothing that I’ve played before and I loved it so much, that I went back and played Persona 1, 2 and numerous SMT titles, and then eagerly anticipated the release of Persona 4. When I played Persona 4 Golden for the first time back in the day, I thought that was the pinnacle of what the Persona franchise can achieve, but Atlus has shown us they have more than enough gas in the tank to keep this train going with Persona 5.

Persona 5 The Royal Screenshot Evil Spirit Powerfu
Turn based combat

The game feels much like a second home, while the outside world remains turbulent as ever, Joker and company are there for you if you need some entertainment to wind down. The characters feel like real people with real problems that are willing to test your empathy all through this 100-hour adventure. Persona 5 doesn’t just focus on the glam, it does the mundane really well. There are moments where you’re cleaning up your room, going out with a friend, or having your depressed guardian take you to school. You get used to just chilling and taking it all in, because every moment in this adventure counts and you foolishly start to understand it only when the end credits are starting to roll.

Persona 5 The Royal 3
Social events

The story is another strong point and while some moments seem predictable, it doesn’t take away from its glory. Dungeons are improved compared to Persona 4 and they are separated in two categories campaign related and side content (which remain procedurally generated). The gameplay/combat animations are incredible and even something incredibly mundane as getting the upper hand in a battle seems smooth and stylish (even more in 120fps!). The soundtrack is brilliant and yes, during the years this has become a tradition in almost every Persona/SMT game and thank God it is, because it helps tremendously to set the mood.

Persona 5 Royal is a collection of many things: inspiring stories, good times with good friends, a stunning visual novel and an amazing dungeon crawler. By working on what was already great and with brilliant new additions, Persona 5 Royal is an unforgettable experience that has you thinking about it long after it’s over.

Ys IX Monstrum Nox is probably the biggest ARPG from Falcom to date - and one of the most notable JRPG releases this year.]]>

Ys IX Monstrum Nox, the latest game of the YS JRPG series, has been released for the PS4 since September last year - and it has now been confirmed for a Western localization and release.

Ys IX Monstrum Nox English is going to be released in just a few months

In a recent interview with Gematsu, Toshihiro Kondo, Nihon Falcom's president revealed that preparations have been made for three of their titles to get an English release: Ys IX Monstrum Nox, Zero no Kiseki, and Ao no Kiseki. The Ys series has been growing after each and every installment - and with Monstrum Nox, it looks like Falcom has perfected the formula. In this review below, we will list out some of the game's strongest points - if you are a fan of the JRPG genre, this is a title you cannot miss.

1 - Ys IX Monstrum Nox: The Settings and Characters

Ys IX Monstrum Nox's story takes place in the Romun control city of Balduq, located in the Gllia region, northeast if Esteria. It is known as "the prison city" due to its huge prison facility featuring high walls covering the majority of the town. The city, built upon the heavily fortified area, is an important hub for transportation in the region, which leads to a huge number of bars, trade centers, and inns. Monstrums are strange supernatural beings that have been appearing in recent years - some are benevolent but others are up to no good.

The cast of Ys IX Monstrum Nox PS4

Adol Christin, the protagonist of the game, was falsely accused of destroying a Romun fleet during a voyage and taken to the prison city - which was deemed inescapable. However. with the help of a mysterious cloaked female, he escapes from imprisonment and embarks on an adventure to solve the mysteries of the city and its strange supernatural inhabitants.

Supports Adol in his tasks are his best friend Dogi and five other Monstrums: White Cat, Hawk, Raging Bull, Doll and Regenade, each with their own unique powers and personalities.

2 - Ys IX Monstrum Nox: World and Exploration

Once you are released from jail, you would get to explore the semi-open world of Ys IX Monstrum Nox - however, only one district at a time. The game has an extremely linear approach regarding exploration: you have to clear all the quest in a given area and clear the main quest in order to progress to the next one. While this approach is limited, it prevents you from missing any content of the game and can be considered a plus of sort.

Ys Ix Monstrum Nox Review
Ys Ix Monstrum Nox Review: Exploring the various districts of the city is a lot of fun

Traveling inside the city is extremely fun - each of your companions has their own way of moving around: Hawk can fly over everything, White Cat can run on walls... and these abilities are crucial in solving side quests and secrets.

3 - Ys IX Monstrum Nox: Story Arcs

The game is divided into chapters, each focused on one member in your party. Players would get to explore their teammates' backstory in great detail, making those characters feel real and enjoyable. Each of them would have their own struggle, regrets, fears... and more. The most well written is probably Doll, a puppet who constantly see flashbacks of her own past, and never stop wondering about the reason she was given a soul. The secondary casts of character are pretty well written as well - you would get a lot of unexpected interactions all over the place; from a 12 years old assassin girl, a water demon, to a grandma resistance fighter...

Ys Ix Monstrum Nox PC
Ys Ix Monstrum Nox PC: Boss fights are the most notable part of this release - with each and every boss being a great challenge

The pacing of the story is also a huge plus - the narrative features a lot of surprises, questions, and unexpected plot twists - and all of it was wrapped up with an amazing epilogue. Overall, this excellent storytelling is probably one of the brightest parts of this game's success.

4 - Ys IX Monstrum Nox: Gameplay

The Action RPG battle system that was very appreciated in Ys VIII was brought back: players would unleash combos with different attacks along with one finisher skill. Those combos would be unlocked gradually as you level up, with four can be equipped at the same time for more variance. The two core features of Ys VIII, guarding and dodging, are also brought back - a successful attempt would either increase the speed of your actions or slow time down briefly. This mechanic is crucial if you are going to tackle higher difficulties.

Another high point of the combat in Ys IX is the defense missions: Players would have to defend an obelisk while enemies swarm from all sides - the gigantic clash taking place is frantic and a lot of fun.

Ys IX Monstrum Nox PS4
Ys IX Monstrum Nox PS4: The bosses are uniquely designed - they would be very different from whatever you have faced before

Like any decent JRPG, Ys IX Monstrum Nox features a lot of intense boss battles - and none of them was reused later in-game. This is actually a huge step forward - the bestiary for this entry could fill a whole encyclopedia. Main bosses are intricately designed, with various unpredictable patterns and improved strengths toward the end of the fight, making all main story battle really engaging. These peculiarities are only revealed in hard difficulty or above, and because of that, it is recommended to start this game at Hard. There is an extra mode called Boss Rush for people who want to retry the boss fights with harder conditions as well.

5 - Ys IX Monstrum Nox: Graphics and Music

The framerate holds up quite well - despite this being Falcom's biggest world ever created. Some compromises were made, however - objects at larger distances would either be covered up by fog or get their quality reduced. The music selection was great, in both dungeon, battle and ambiance. The various interesting melodies definitely go well with the pace of the gameplay: they ranged from Gothic, Symphonic, Buconic... and more.

6 - Ys IX Monstrum Nox: Verdict

Ys IX Monstrum Nox doesn't really innovate much from the success formula of VIII - it just expands on the existing concepts. While its linear/lack of freedom nature might disappoint, almost every other aspect of the game is stellar. Interested in more of our posts related to JRPGs and RPGs in general? Arc of Alchemist is a new JRPG that's going to be released in early next year.]]>

Earlier today, a new trailer about the upcoming JRPG Arc of Alchemist has been revealed. The game was first announced last year and aimed at Fall 2019 release date, but after some delay, the game's launch is now pushed back to early next year.

But first, let's take a look at the new trailer of the game:

The new Arc of Alchemist game revolves around Quinn Bravesford, a girl with a great responsibility of leading the Kingdom's soldier into the Desert of the Beginning - in order to find the key to save humanity in the form of "the Great Power".

Comes equipped with Quinn is the ancient alchemic device Lunagear, and her mission is to equip the Gear with 4 Power Orbs. According to legend, when all 4 orbs got equipped into the Lunagear, "the Great Power" that can save humanity will be unlocked.

However, the journey into the desert is not easy, as dangerous creatures always roaming the desert. Also, Quinn is not the only one looking for the great power of legends, as the enemy nation - the Principality of Neuhaven - also dispatch their army of Machine Dolls into the desert.

As far as the gameplay goes, the Lunagear and all four power orbs will enable your characters with elemental attacks - associated with four orb elements: Fire, Water, Earth, and Wind. Those elements can be combined with each other, enabling you to use even stronger attacks. Along with that, your enemies will have their own elemental weaknesses, adding even more depth into the battle.

According to the developers, the game will bring a bunch of weapons and skill to the customization aspect, which will allow you to have many strategies to fight againsst enemies. Also, the "Ace of Bases" features will let you customize your allies, too.

War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is a new turn-based mobile game from Square Enix. The game has just received a new trailer and is currently up for pre-registration in Japan.]]>

Square Enix and gumi inc. originally revealed their new mobile game War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius for Android and iOS back in December last year. At the time, however, the title was still shrouded in mystery, and all fans really knew was that it would be a tactics game. Now, Square has released a brand new trailer and opened its game for pre-registration. Check out this new trailer below:

War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius takes place on a continent called Adler, which is part of the world of Lapis. Since ancient times, legends of crystals have been passed down from generation to generation on this land, and now, the story of a “War of the Visions” – one that revolves around supremacy – will begin.

Combat is set on a 3D field with various levels of elevation and features a tactical system. In addition to the “High-Speed Mode”, there is also an “Auto Mode” to help new players get a hang of the game.

Moreover, each character also possesses unique “Abilities” and “Limit Bursts” alongside “Summons” that comes with a cool 3D animation when activated. The “Job System” that is quite familiar in other Final Fantasy games will also make a return here. The “Story Quests” are fully voiced, and there are also plenty of other quests such as “Event Quests” and “World Quests” for players to do.

Not only that, but War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius also includes several PvP aspects such as “Multi Raids,” “Multi Quests,” “Duel (that takes place in real time),” and many other things for advanced players to get into.

The story of the game revolves around 5 kingdoms that are at war

Pre-registration is currently available on the game’s official Japanese website. Naturally, participants stand to receive several rewards if certain milestones are achieved. More specifically, if the campaign gets 400,000 pre-registrations, players will obtain Siren as a summon, and if there are 500,000 pre-registrations, Y’shtola Rhul from FFXIV will be given as a unit character.

War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is scheduled to launch later this year for the Japanese market. There is no mention about a global release as of yet, however.

A gorgeous J-RPG from the publisher Idea Factory International.]]>

Idea Factory International has just released a new trailer for Dragon Star Varnir. The publisher of the game confirmed that it will launch for PS4 on June 11 in North America and June 14 in EU, right after the E3 2019.

The game tells the story about witches - who born with a Dragon residing within them. It grants them power while driving them insane at the same time. They need to drink the blood of a dragon to prevent this, however, the dragon's blood will make the dragon inside them stronger and eventually the dragon will tear them apart to escape. The main character is Zephy, a hunter who hates both dragons and witches. Later on in the story, he is saved by a witch using dragon's blood. The hunter becomes a witch, the enemies become his friends while his former friends turn against him.

The dragon's blood keep their insanity while killing them gradually

The gameplay even has its own mechanics to show the relationship between hunters and witches. This is a turn-based RPG game like those classic Final Fantasy games decades ago. But, of course, they added a new layer to the battle system to increase the "dynamic battle experience". In a battle with Dragons, the battlefield will be split into 3 levels which both sides can move freely between.

The trailer also revealed a lot of mechanics and skills that might sound a little bit familiar to you if you are an experienced RPG gamer. Also, it is a J-RPG so the art is very typical and Japanese (if you know what I mean).

Octopath Traveler from Square Enix is one of the best Nintendo Switch exclusive games to date, but soon mobile gamers will be able to get their hands on this engaging JRPG.

On Friday, Square Enix revealed that it is working on a prequel to Octopath Traveler, titled Octopath Traveler: Tairiku no Hasha (Expected English title: Octopath Traveler: Champion of the Continent). This prequel is going to be available for both Android and iOS users, and its story will take place several years prior to the original game. Champion of the Continent also promises to add several new features, such as allowing players to bring 8 characters into combat.

A trailer is also available, check it out below:

As you can see, this upcoming mobile title is going to retain the trademark “2D-HD” graphics of the Switch version, but it will tell the story of a brand new group of warriors and their adventures through the continent of Orsterra. The protagonist is a “Chosen One” who embarks on a quest to combat a great evil. Of course, controls have been modified to fit the touch-and-swipe-based nature of the platform. Released in July 2018 on Nintendo Switch, the original Octopath Traveler is a classic JRPG with a unique design, expansive characters, and an engaging turn-based combat system. In this game, players can experience the story in any order they choose. Moreover, similar to other Square Enix games, it features a detailed Job system that opens up more room for players to customize their characters.

Octopath Traveler Prequel

So far, the upcoming prequel for mobile has only been announced for Japan. It is not confirmed whether it is going to come to other regions. Additionally, Square Enix also said that it’s working on another sequel at the same time, but it is going to be quite a while until we hear more about that one. For now, stay tuned for more update on Octopath Traveler: Champion of the Continent!

<![CDATA[How to start playing Disgaea 5 without getting confused]]> https://gurugamer.com/pc-console/disgaea-5-tips-269 Thu, 25 Oct 2018 07:01:24 +0000 https://gurugamer.com/pc-console/disgaea-5-tips-269
Some tips for playing a great JRPG.]]>

After a long time waiting, Disgaea 5 is finally available on PC. Along with Disgaea 1 and 2, this is the 3rd game from Disgaea series that got ported to PC. But the problem is, the most recent Disgaea on PC is Disgaea 2 - so if you don't follow the series on other platforms, you WILL getting confused. Story wise, gameplay wise, there are so many new things on this latest installment. If we have to make a comparison, it's like reading a book to page 100, and then skip right through the end.

Yfbfznigtsefsyon4dpzbb 650 80

So, what can you do to not getting overwhelmed by the sheer amount of new contents? Well, here are some tips for you.

Prioritizes on the storyline

In Disgaea 5, there are so many side activities that you can do. From Item World dungeons, to Netherworld Investigation, or playing Chara World board game, and so many more things. All these side activities are fun and worth doing, but they are not the main priority. For a game as huge as Disgaea 5, it can be so easy to get overwhelmed and lose your way in the process. Believe me, I've spent like 70 hours of doing side activities, without touching the story AT ALL.

Bm8jvvb7apwfymrogrodkb 650 80

Of course, you can play the game any way you like, doing any things you want. But my advice is, you should prioritize the story mission above all else. For a huge game like this, the main story serve like a big tutorial, and will help you get more familiar with the game mechanics and systems. You will also unlock more characters, abilities, and even more side activities with the story missions.

Tweak the settings any way you like

Disgaea 5 features a special "settings" menu, which is the "Cheat Shop". In this menu, you can pretty much do any things you want with the game. You can increase the amount of exp you earn (at the cost of decreasing the gold gains), change the difficulty, or even out right detonate all your characters (seriously don't do that).

Hc4hjeaxyjtwct6hmwhsgb 650 80

Since the game provides you with so much freedom, just tweak the game as you see fit. Feels the game is getting too easy? Turn the difficulty up to eleven. Need more gold? Raise the gold rate to the max. Before doing anything, remembers to go to the Cheat Shop and make adjustment based on your goal. Also, don't forget the main settings, where you can change graphics and voice options, and the speed of combat, text and cursor.

Don't forget to check Quest Shop and Dark Assembly on a regular basis

Yucke95jzzk2pwliuwgwlb 650 80

With so many things to do in Disgaea 5, of course it's easy to get confused and forget what to do at times. But if I have to make an advice, then try not to forget checking the Dark Assembly and Quest Shop. They are located at the hub, and will provide you with essential resources to the game. While the Dark Assembly provide you combat bonuses and upgrading resources, the Quest Shop is essential to unlock new classes. There are also some quest that will reward rare scrolls, which can add new skills for the characters.

The problem is, there are absolutely no notifications of when those good things are available, so you have to check it yourself, regularly.

Disgaea 5's battle system is deeper than what you might think

Giakgz8kn2io2pu3v9ygdb 650 80

You might think of Disgaea 5 as a typical JRPG, with grid-based, turn-based combat system. You control your team, move them around on the battlefield, attack the enemies. Which is right, but that's not all the things Disgaea 5 offers. Here are some combat maneuvers that you can implemented in your game plan:

Capturing: Available after unlocking Capture Squad in the Netherworld. With this, you can capture enemies instead of killing them. After capturing, you can interrogate them to gain items, or use them as your units.

Towering: You can stacking your character to form a tower. This maneuver will distribute exp evenly among all units, which will help with leveling. Also, when stacking units to form a tower, you will unlock special "tower attacks".

Throwing: One of the techniques for tower stacking, since you can throw your units to the same square to make a tower. Along with that, you can also throw your allies to reach higher platform in the battleground, too. This technique is applicable to enemies, too, and if you throw an enemy to another enemy, they will combine to make a stronger opponents, which worth even more experience.

There are some classes more powerful than others

Vcfcjkm6vzny5pmgdenamb 650 80

As with many games with class-based system, there will be some classes that can make your game becomes a breeze. So if you are a casual player, just want to enjoy the game and cheese though all the hard stuff, then it's a good idea to invest your time to these units:

Armor Knight: Super tanker, can protect 3 alies no matter how far they are.

Wrestler: They can throw allies all over the map, which is essential for towering strats.

Thief: An unit that can steal items from enemies, so you can easily get better items at the early game.

Maid: A balance unit, which will provide unique buffs to allies.

Professor: A strong support unit, which provide better buffs than maids, but have weaker stats overall.

Build a balance party

Nqy5ra9eanp3x9si8jnzpb 650 80

Since Disgaea 5 is a game with loads and loads of characters, it give you a lot of choices for units loadout. But that doesn't mean you should use all the units - just focus on those who fits with your playstyle, or strategies. Don't try to equip everyone with the best gears, just focus on around 10 characters, since you can only bring along 10 units to battles.

Also, the main characters are really good, and you should focus on them, too. Aims to have balance party, which have both range and melee attacks, physical and magic, buffs, and healing.

Don't try min-maxing at the early game

Jdmcztphs2rcneeqsnl6ub 650 80

You can, and free to make mistakes at building your characters in Disgaea 5. If you are not happy with your character build, just reincarnate them and build again from scratch. At the early games, wrong builds doesn't matter much, so don't sweat over it. When the build are matter (at the late game), you'll have access to some of the best grinding spot in the game, so rebuilt a character is not a big problem anymore. Have fun with try out different builds, and don't worry about the consequences.

Everything we know about the remaking of the legendrary JRPG game Final Fantasy 7 up to this point.]]>

As every fan of RPG knows, Final Fantasy 7 is a famous Japanese RPG released in the year 1997. In recent years, Square Enix declared that it would remake this legendary game. The remaking of the game was first announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2015, and fans of the RPG genre have been eagerly looking forward to observing the new Final Fantasy 7 since.

However, it is not simple for the remake to be actually released, since the development for the game seemed to have several struggles. While the release date is not officially set till now, people can still have for themselves various rumors and news of the legendary JRPG in this article.

Trailers

The remake’s first trailer was revealed at E3 3 years ago, covered with largely cinematic animations:

Also in the year 2015 at the PSX event, gameplay of the RPG’s remake was featured in the second trailer:

Release date

Started to be developed since 2014 but due to several issues, the remake of Final Fantasy 7 hasn’t got any official release date. It is believed that the remake will eventually has more than 1 release date, since its creator confirmed that the story of the game will be told in multiple episodes. Another reason for the delay of release date announcement is the change in the game’s development team, from CyberConnect2 to the in-house team of Square Enix.

Final Fantasy 7 remake’s director Tetsuya Nomura once answered to Famitsu that some parts of the game, like cutscenes, are in a further stage of development than the game Kingdom Hearts 3. As Kingdom Hearts 3 will be officially released in 2019, Final Fantasy 7 fans are hoping that their game will come out in the same year.

Also at E3, Final Fantasy 7 remake was promised to be available on PlayStation 4 first, then will come to PC and Xbox One later. However, there is currently no information on how long it will remain PS4-exclusive for before coming to Xbox One and PC.

Rumors and news

Will the release date not be announced soon?

It seems that the remake couldn’t appear in public within the year 2019. According to The Lifestream’s recent report, the waiting time could be up to 5 more years. The developing progress of the game seemed to be slowed down due to several turbulences.

On the other hand, recently there was a conversation between Yoshinori Kitase, producer of the remake and Naoki Hamaguchi, the game’s development lead. In the discussion, the Final Fantasy 7 remake was suggested to be released in the year 2023 before its 35th anniversary. However, this perhaps is not the truth since there is still no official statement from Square Enix responding to the rumor. The fans will have to wait at least until this year’s E3, when Square Enix will have their presentation. Hopefully they will give out some more information.

The game is not a full remake, it's just a reconstruction

The RPG’s remake will keep the narrative of its original game, featuring the fans’ favorite old iconic characters as well as locations. Despite receiving a lot of pressure about the famous game’s recreation, director from Square Enix Tetsuya Nomura stated that his team’s intention for the remake is neither recreating every single shot, nor just improving the graphics of the original game. According to Nomura, he likely wants this remake to catch up to the current gaming models with new and fresh features, while not being changed so much from the original Final Fantasy 7.

The remake is episodic

It is true that the new Final Fantasy 7 will be episodic, different from its 1997 version. In 2015, this detail was confirmed as Yoshinori Kitase, the series producer, thought that it would take more than one installment to have a quality remake that retains the old feeling of Final Fantasy 1997.

Answering the question why they came to this decision, Yoshinori Kitase said that if they tried to compress everything from the old legendary game into just one game, they would have needed to cut several parts. The producer believed that fans will understand their decision and he hoped to receive appreciation for their project’s designs as well as development, which was promised to be surprising and fresh.

The number of episodes is not announced yet. However, it is claimed that each episode of the game will be an “unique experience”.

The game will not keep the turn-based battles

Nomura once answered to Famitsu that instead of command-based battles, the new Final Fantasy 7 will be designed as action-based. Through Nomura’s brief glimpses about the combat system, it is expected that the RPG’s remake will have a similar formula as the game Kingdom Hearts. The game will have more battles in seamless and active style as well as having the capability of switching party members. This approach is likely to attract more new players thanks to its fresh and interesting designs.

By a hurried look, you can see the familiar features in the general formation of Epic Seven as the game’s design artists have also been involved in various previous projects such as Dragon Nest or Magna Carta. Thus, the gamer community has absolutely no reasons for any concerns or suspicion. Especially, in term of technical quality, the game is promised to offer no latency and not to require any additional download.

Overall, Epic Seven has a glamorous appearance and a vibrant battle system. The game has no release date yet, but hopefully, Publisher Smilegate Megaport will do a good job for its official launch in the upcoming time. Whatever, it’s the future concern. Just now, be smart and hurry up to book a slot in Google Play in advance to get immersed in this attractive game as soon as possible.
